In the work at home industry, there is a difference between a work at home job and a work at home opportunity. An opportunity usually involves an initial fee and you have to sign up for the opportunity. A work at home job, never requires a fee. In addition, you are either an employee, contract worker or freelancer for the actual company you do the work for, or for a company that the work has been outsourced to.
There are several types of jobs or lines of work that can be done from home. In the section below, you will find a list of some of the more common fields found within the work at home industry and a basic description of each.

Work At Home Jobs

Coder - Usually in the legal & health care industries. Coders take relevent information from documents and enter it into data fields. Special codes that are used within the industry are also assigned (ex: insurance forms, legal documents). Often requires experience and special software.
Customer Service Representatives - Usually requires high speed internet connection and separate phone line. Provide customer support for the products & services the company sells. Depending on the company, this could be via live chat programs, emails, phone, etc.
Data Entry - Taking hand-written or printed records and typing them into a computer to be stored in the companies records. Data entry clerks can also be referred to as word processor typists, home typists, data entry keyers, electronic data processors, keypunch operators and keypunch technicians.
Editor, Proofreader & Writer - Requires special skills and often times a degree. Needs a basic familiarity with computers, desktop or electronic publishing systems, scanners, etc. Proofreaders, check and correct the work of writers. Editors plan the content for a publication, decide which written works will be used, review and approve drafts, etc.
Freelancer Writer - Sells their work to various industries or contracted to write a book, article, or complete specific assignments, such as writing about a new product or technique, advertisements, content for websites, etc.
Transcription- Listen to dictated recordings usually made by physicians or lawyers & typing them into reports. Sometimes require a headset, a foot pedal for pausing when needed & a computer or word processor. The transcribed documents become part of the patients' or clients' files.
Online Tutor - Requires current teaching certifcation or a degree, and a computer with internet access. Help educate learners of all ages in particular subjects, languages, specialized fields, software applications, etc.
Telemarketer - A form of direct marketing where a salesperson uses the telephone to solicit prospective customers to sell them products or services.
Translators - Must be fluent in at least two languages, and have the ability to relay concepts and ideas between the languages. A thorough understanding of the subject being translated is a must.
Virtual Assistant - Provides administrative and personal support from a separate location, using phone, fax and emails. Work is usually of a secretarial nature for business owners, CEO's, managers and entrepreneurs.
